Evaluation & Analysis (Music Magazine)

Double Page Spread

For my double page spread, i had somewhat mixed feelings but overall i was pleased with it. I was happy with the photo in the background and the editing of it, I feel as if the blurring and distorting of the image made the magazine itself stand out more to the audience. The distorting of the double page spread links back to the cover and the contents page which i felt worked quite well. The distorting of the background looks unnatural, but feels natural in a weird way because it suits the theme of phonk quite well. One thing i would change however is the glitching. The use of glitching was effective with the theme however the font and the glitch isnt accessible for everyone to read. For example people with dyslexia could find the glitching hard to bypass and understand whilst reading, etc. The program that i used to produce this was Photoleap and videostar, Video star was a wild card with the editing process as the name suggests, is a video editing app. So during the editing process i somewhat struggled as there were only 5 set canvas sizes. The reason however i used video star is because it was an app i was familiar with. However, in the future i feel i should branch out to other apps such as Photoshop as theres more possibilities and it would be better suited to producing a music magazine. I also think that the background of the page spread should've been a darker pink opposed to blue as it would've linked to the front page even more; but then again, i like the variety of the colours that was provided throughout the pages.

Contents

For the contents, i took Inspiration from the Y2K or Grunge aesthetic, hence the butterflies, whilst keeping the idea of phonk and indie in mind. Since the magazine is the first edition, we started off the contents with getting to know the members and their interests. For the layout and the style, i kept the same glitchy style from the first few pages as it mirrors the double page spread and the front cover. The contents page i would say is my least favourite of the three, as its pretty plain overall and isn't all that interesting. However due to a lack of images we had taken, one of the pages had to take a 'hit' with the lack of content. If we were to do this type of magazine again however i would make sure to ensure that there are more than enough images to use, and that the pages were done to a high enough standard that i would be happy with.

Front Cover

Overall, the front cover is definitely my favourite out of the three. The front cover was also coincidentally the one that took the longest, which was around 1-2 hours. This was due to the layering process and swapping between apps. Firstly, we named our magazine the rejectables because of an inside joke we all share. We felt by naming our magazine this, that it would feel more personalised and unique to us. In particular, i liked the photo of me and Todd next to a sign with our faces blurred. This is because we also followed the theme of concealment. The pixelated faces i feel makes the magazine stand out more as its unique and out of the ordinary. The use of the 'Parent Explicitory Content' Logo again makes the magazine stand out as its familiar and is commonly used logo for album covers. This familiarity would strike the reader and hopefully draw in an audience. The text however is abit of a hit and miss due to the accessiblity. Not everyone can decipher or understand words that are glitched or put into another way, for example: people with dyslexia or other learning disabilities. However, in the future if we were to do this again i would definitely use fonts that are dyslexia friendly such as Comic Sans as its easier for the reader to interpret what had been typed. I feel perhaps i could've made the text smaller and added more text to the front cover instead of naming the page numbers, however i didn't want the page to look too full or overcrowded, because i still wanted the text to be visible at a glance. With the magazine itself again, i was inspired by Drift Phonk album covers and Y2K aesthetics, this is because its out of the ordinary and typically very unique and modern, which i particularly liked because not many people are aware of this music style.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I'm overall very happy with the final products, although i could've made some changes. However in the future if we were to create this again i would take my own advice on board and make some amendments.
